Foot Health Month kicked off on October 1. This year the theme is ‘’Sock it to Diabetes’’ which is aimed at promoting good foot health care for people with diabetes in order to reduce the large toll of complications and amputations.

The campaign is aimed at further recognition of the role that podiatrists play in the care of people living with diabetes and the need for better coordinated and funded foot care to prevent amputations

Every week, 85 Australians lose toes, a foot or a lower limb because of diabetes-related complications (Diabetes Australia). Early detection can prevent an amputation.

If you or someone you know has diabetes then don’t become a statistic. It is important to:

  • Examine your feet daily
  • Have your feet regularly checked by a podiatrist
  • If you find any cuts, wounds or scratches get to your podiatrist quickly
