What are orthotics?
Orthotics (also known as orthoses) are medical foot devices prescribed by a podiatrist or heath professional, designed specifically to improve foot function and lower leg mechanics. They are placed into your footwear and work by restoring and supporting the foot’s normal arch and alignment.

Why is foot function important during gait?
The function of your feet is very important when walking or running. Ideally your feet should roll in slightly (pronate) at ground contact as this helps to absorb shock and forces associated with heel strike. However during midstance and single leg stance the foot should stop rolling and be more stable as it supports the leg and prepares for propulsion. During propulsion the foot should be stable and act as a rigid lever so you get maximum propulsion with little output at toe off.
If your foot rolls in too much or excessively pronates then it can cause excess rotation and strain on other joints further up the leg. It causes the foot to become unstable and apropulsive during gait. This instability is then transferred to other joints further up the leg. Excess foot pronation causes excess internal rotation of the lower leg, knee, hip and pelvis. The result is more strain on muscles and joints, poor alignment, reduced stability and an increased likelihood of foot and lower leg pain.

How can orthotics benefit your feet?
Orthotics improve foot function and help to correct biomechanical faults. These faults are often detected by our Melbourne podiatrists using computer gait analysis and are a common cause of lower leg and foot injuries. Some common biomechanical faults observed during gait include; excess pronation, over supination, ankle instability, pelvic tilt, and leg length discrepancies. Orthotics when placed in appropriate footwear eliminates these faults, which results in improved stability, muscle function, lower leg mechanics and gait. This can help treat and prevent common foot and lower leg symptoms (see below for specific conditions):

Orthotics available at our Camberwell clinic
At our Melbourne foot clinic we have a large range of orthotics suitable for all ages including children, adults, seniors and sports athletes. Our podiatrists have devices to suit all foot types and all budgets. Whether you need a cushioning, pressure relief, functional, prefabricated, non-cast, or custom-made orthotic our team of experienced podiatrists at our Melbourne foot clinic will make sure you get the best care for your feet.

Cushioning orthotics are made from soft materials with good shock absorption properties. They can be designed as either a flat insole or a device which includes some arch support.

Pressure relief orthotics are designed by our Melbourne podiatrists and incorporate soft accommodative padding built into the design to redistribute pressure. Thy can be designed as a flat insole or incorporated into prefabricated or custom designs. Custom orthotics with pressure relief padding incorporated into the cover design work the best as the customised arch will help take more load off other parts of the foot such as the forefoot.

Functional orthotics can be either prefabricated or custom-made. The podiatrists at our Melbourne foot clinic are experienced in prescription of these functional foot devices for all ages including children, adult, senior and sporting feet. Functional orthotics are mostly prescribed following biomechanical assessment and computer gait analysis.
Prefabricated orthotics are a functional device and can be prescribed by our podiatrists on the spot at our Melbourne clinic provided you have an appointment. Unfortunately prebfabricated arch supports have limitations due to their foot correction ability. Also they are generally made out of softer materials which means they are more bulky, less corrective and more susceptible to fatigue when compared to custom orthotics.
Non-cast orthotics are semi-customised functional devices that are matched according to a patients foot tracing and size. These foot devices are made at Footwork, the same lab that makes our custom devices and are called Joeys. They look similar to our custom orthotics except they only come in four different styles, each with their own unique correction.
Non-cast Joey orthotics are a better option to prefabricated devices as they are less bulky, more corrective and last longer. They also make a great cost alternative to custom devices but unfortunately they will not suit all foot types and arch shapes. Our Melbourne podiatrists will let you know if your feet are suited to Joey orthotics.
Custom orthotics are custom-made functional foot devices. They are the best foot devices available and provide the most accurate support you can get for your feet. These custom devices are prescribed by our podiatrists at our Melbourne foot clinic following computer gait analysis and 3D laser scanned digital casts. Our custom orthotics are manufactured at Footwork one of the leading labs in Australia, ensuring quality and precision.
Custom orthotics are tailor made to your feet and follow a prescription based on your symptoms, your footwear and your biomechanics. They are designed to optimise your foot function and lower leg mechanics. At our Melbourne foot clinic custom devices can be prescribed in a range of materials (rigid or soft) and designs (thick or thin) to suit any foot and footwear requirement. Because they are custom-made to your feet, no matter what the material, if they are prescribed right they should be 100% comfortable.
Custom orthotics are fantastic for treating nearly all conditions of the feet and can help treat ankle pain, shin pan, knee pain, hip pain and even lower back pain. They are also great for treating difficult conditions such as plantar fasciitis and heel pain.
The professional team of podiatrists at our Melbourne clinic are experienced in custom orthotic prescription for all ages including children’s feet, adult, seniors and sporting feet.
