Plantar fibroma

What is a plantar fibroma?
A plantar fibroma is a lump usually on the arches of the feet and is a common yet overlooked condition that can cause pain and discomfort. These non-cancerous growths are made of fibrous tissues, while they are usually benign, plantar fibromas are still able to contribute to disruptions in daily life.
Who is likely to experience plantar fibromas?
Anyone is likely to be affected by plantar fibromas although the cause is still unknown. However, some certain factors may increase the likelihood of developing one. This includes:
- Age: Plantar fibromas are more common in middle-aged & older adults. There is a peak incidence between 30-60 year olds.
- Foot structure: People with flat feet or high arches may have a higher chance of developing plantar fibromas. These foot types can put increased stress on certain tissues in the feet.
- Overuse: Constant stress or trauma to the foot, such as participating in high-impact sports or inadequate footwear can increase the chance of developing a plantar fibroma. Ongoing irritation to the tissues may also lead to the development of fibrous growths.
Signs and symptoms of plantar fibromas?
These growths are typically slow-growing and may cause a variety of signs and symptoms, including:
- Lumps: This is the most common sign of a plantar fibroma, the development of a small, firm lump typically in the arch of the foot. It can also be tender to touch & feel rubbery.
- Pain or discomfort: Where the fibroma may sit can cause pain and discomfort, particularly when walking or standing. Pain may worsen in certain activities or certain shoes.
- Limited range of motion: Stiffness can be quite common in the foot or arch when plantar fibromas are present. They can impact the range of motion making it quite difficult to flex or move the toes and ankle. This may also increase foot pain.
Treatment options for Plantar fibromas?
There are several treatment options for plantar fibromas, depending on the severity, location and symptoms experienced by the individual. Some common treatment options may include:
- Stretching & Strengthening: Certain exercises will improve flexibility and may alleviate symptoms in the foot caused by a plantar fibroma.
- Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatories (NSAIDs): Over-the-counter pain relief medication containing NSAIDs, can help in reducing pain, swelling and inflammation from the plantar fibroma. They can come in an oral or topical format. Corticosteroid injections may be also considered to provide relief & settle inflammation.
- Custom orthotics: In certain cases custom orthotic devices can help provide support and cushioning to alleviate & redistribute pressure from the plantar fibroma.
- Surgery: In cases where conservative treatment is unsuccessful, surgery may be considered to remove the fibroma. This is typically known as a last resort treatment option for severe cases of plantar fibromas.
