Are Your Feet Ready For Summer?
Summer is here again and as the temperature rises so does the pressure on our feet. With the sun shining in summer and the longer days people generally spend more time on their feet. This is great for staying fit and healthy however unfortunately most of that time is often spent in unsupportive footwear such as thongs and sandals.
The old aussie rubber thongs are back and are as popular as ever but they are often bad for the feet. They offer no support for our feet which can lead to ankle sprains and more strain on foot tendons. Open heeled summer shoes and sandals also offer little ankle support and with no heel protection can lead to dryness and cracking of the skin around the heels. Also known as heel fissures these cracks are unsightly and when large will often cause pain. This can be a potentially serious problem in people who are more prone to infections such as diabetics and those with neuropathy.
To cut down on foot problems this summer we recommend you use a good foot moisturising cream regularly around your heels. This is particularly important if your skin is dry and prone to cracking or if you suffer from diabetes. We also recommend that people not spend all of their summer in thongs and sandals and instead wear good supportive walking shoes when doing any exercise or sustained activity. If you suffer from dry and cracked heels then our podiatrists can help.
If you are ready to enjoy this summer then make sure your feet are ready too.
