Aussie Olympians inspire a new generation of runners

Australian athletes golden time in Tokyo
With ongoing lockdowns it is easy to get bogged down by the constant streams of bad news. The
light in the dark over the last few weeks has been the Tokyo Olympic games.
The Tokyo Olympics has come to an end and Australia enjoyed its equal most successful games in
history since Athens in 2004. The team takes home 17 gold medals, 7 silver and 22 bronze, finishing
6th place overall.
The Australian swimmers dazzled taking home 9 gold medals, with 4 of those belonging to
Emma McKeon, an amazing achievement.
One of the most exciting things to take away from the recent games, was our up and coming
athletes in the track and field. A bronze in the Men’s decathlon for Ash Moloney and Rohan
Browning stunned his competitors by winning his 100m heat over a medal favourite.
But who could forget Peter Bol. Peter reached the Men’s 800m final, the first Australian in the event
since 1968. Bol burst out of the blocks in the final and made his fellow competitors work hard.
Unfortunately, Bol just missed out on a medal but he has captured Australian hearts and less than a
fortnight later, he took home the win at the track and field meet in Poland. He beat the Polish
runner Patryck Dobek who pipped Bol for the bronze in Tokyo. It’s nice to get one back,
congratulations and take a bow Peter Bol.
